What Are Nakshatras?

Nakshatras are the oldest and most nuanced unit of Vedic astrology. The 360° ecliptic is divided into 27 equal segments of roughly 13°20' each. The Moon crosses one Nakshatra per day, and the Nakshatra the Moon occupied at your birth becomes your Janma Nakshatra — the foundation of your inner psyche and emotional nature.

Each Nakshatra has its own symbol, ruling planet, presiding deity, gana (Deva/Manushya/Rakshasa), and four padas (quarters). Astrologers use Nakshatras for choosing an auspicious muhurta, naming a newborn, matching charts for marriage, and writing daily horoscopes.

The Three Ganas

Deva Gana

Divine, calm, spiritual and benevolent temperament. Naturally inclined toward others' welfare.

Manushya Gana

Human, balanced, practical and social. A blend of emotion and reason — most of us live here.

Rakshasa Gana

Strong, intense, courageous. The name is misleading — it simply means forceful willpower and an independent, sometimes unconventional nature.

How Nakshatras Are Used

  • Janma Nakshatra: The Moon's Nakshatra at birth — the key to understanding your mind, emotions and subconscious patterns.
  • Naming the baby: Each Nakshatra-pada has an auspicious starting syllable traditionally used to name a newborn.
  • Kundli Milan: Seven of the eight Ashtakoot factors (Tara, Yoni, Graha Maitri, Gana, Bhakoot, Nadi) are computed from Nakshatras.
  • Muhurta: Choosing the right Nakshatra for an important act — starting a business, travel, housewarming, marriage.
  • Dasha system: The Vimshottari Dasha — the 120-year planetary life cycle that shapes your timing — starts from your birth Nakshatra.
